Bottom line: Go completely wireless with Arlo Pro 3

We love the convenience and flexibility of wireless home security cameras. One of our favorites, the Arlo Pro 3, is 100% wire-free. Its Wi-Fi connection and battery make it easy to install practically anywhere a ladder can reach. This is an expensive security camera, but we think it’s worth the investment.

Find out which cameras on our list are truly wireless, which ones you can use indoors and outdoors, and what smart features each one offers in our comparison table and security camera reviews below.

Best wireless security camera reviews

1. Arlo Pro 3: Best wire-free camera

Wire-free pick
Arlo Pro 3

The Arlo Pro 3 is our pick for the best wireless security camera because it doesn’t need a power cord and still manages to outperform the competition.

We think the Arlo Pro 3 is an excellent choice for a battery-powered camera, especially if you want a quick setup, multiple cameras, and outstanding video quality. Its 2K video captures more detail than 1080p outdoor cameras and records clear video any time of day thanks to infrared night vision and a built-in spotlight.

Pros

  • 2K video resolution
  • 100% wire-free design
  • Indoor/outdoor versatility
  • Smart home integration

Cons

  • High price
  • 2 cameras required to get base station

A helpful tutorial in the Arlo app makes it incredibly easy to set up. And the magnetic wall mount makes it easy to install anywhere. While you have to pay for cloud video storage on the Arlo Pro 3, it’s one of the more affordable subscriptions out there at $2.99 a month.

The biggest drawback of Arlo Pro 3 is that it requires a base station that you get only when buying two or more cameras. This makes it an expensive choice, but it balances out if you need more than one camera. Read our full Arlo camera review.

Arlo on a budget

Arlo recently released a more affordable wire-free camera: Arlo Essential (about $130). We love that it doesn't require a base station like many Arlo cameras and it sports a bright spotlight for color video at night like the Arlo Pro 3. The Essential is our new favorite Arlo camera, but we're still deciding if its lower 1080p resolution compared to the Pro 3 is worthy of our top spot on this list. Stay tuned.

2. Ring Stick Up Cam Battery: Best outdoor camera

Wire-free budget pick
Ring Stick Up Cam Battery

The Ring Stick Up Cam Battery is completely wire-free so you have a ton of flexibility in where you put it. And it costs around $100, making it one of the most affordable security cameras you can use both indoors and outdoors.

As a result, we think the Stick Up Cam Battery is best for people that need a wireless outdoor camera on a budget.

Pros

  • No power cables to wrangle
  • Indoor/outdoor capability
  • Motion-activated sensors
  • Smart home compatibility

Cons

  • Tedious process to recharge battery
  • Short battery life

There are reports of short battery life on Ring products (some say it lasts about a month), and recharging the Stick Up Cam is a tedious process since you need to remove the battery each time.

You can get a solar panel accessory so you don’t need to remove the battery as often, but it’ll cost you extra. Read our Ring Alarm review to see how Ring products all work together.

Ring Spotlight Cam Battery

The Ring Spotlight Cam Battery (about $200) costs twice as much as the Stick Up Cam, but has a couple of added benefits. The built-in siren and bright spotlight can help deter unwelcome visitors by sounding an alarm that's hard to ignore. We also like that the spotlight can double as a path light for getting to and from your car at night.

3. Wyze Cam Pan: Best budget indoor camera

Indoor budget pick
Wyze Cam Pan

This little Wi-Fi camera can scan an entire room in just three seconds. You can adjust settings with the Pan Scan feature to automatically scan an area to your specifications.

The Wyze Cam Pan’s motion tracking is also cool—if a kid or dog runs through the room, the camera will follow all the action. (No more arguments about who broke the lamp.) Plus, you can pick up the Wyze Cam Pan for under $40.

Pros

  • Affordable price
  • 360° coverage with Pan Scan
  • Smart motion tracking
  • Free rolling 14-day cloud storage

Cons

  • Wired power cord
  • Hit-and-miss motion alerts

One of the only things we don’t like is that you need a power cord, which limits placement options. Read our full Wyze Cam review.

4. Canary Pro: Best smart home camera

Smart home pick
canary pro

Canary Pro combines home security features like a siren and environmental sensors with a smart home security camera. And don’t let the small, unobtrusive design fool you.

Canary has packed enough security features into this Wi-Fi camera to make it qualify for home insurance discounts from many major insurers.

Pros

  • Camera, siren, and climate monitor
  • Learning tech to adjust to your habits
  • Alexa and Google integration
  • Direct connection to emergency services

Cons

  • Only 20-foot range for night vision
  • Subscription required for some features
  • Buggy mobile app

The Canary Pro can sense if the fireplace isn’t fully out or let you know if someone left the tub running. We wish it had a little more power when it comes to night vision, though—it only sees about 20 feet in the dark. Read our full Canary review.

5. Google Nest Cam IQ Indoor: High-tech pick

High-tech pick
Nest Cam IQ Indoor

The Google Nest Cam IQ Indoor is awesome when it comes to image, video, and sound quality. Plus it has person alerts and built-in Google Assistant so you can use it as a virtual assistant to control your smart home.

For some, that may be worth the $300 price tag. But while we like the smart functions and home automation compatibility of the Nest Cam IQ, many of the cameras we looked at offer the same perks at a more reasonable price.

Pros

  • Great video quality
  • Compatibility with Google Assistant, Alexa, and other Nest products
  • Crystal clear two-way audio
  • Quality design and aesthetic

Cons

  • High price point
  • Required Nest Aware subscription for coolest features

The fact that you can’t use many of the best features (including video recording) unless you sign up for a monthly subscription is a big downer.

Read more in our review of the Nest cameras suite and our Nest Cam IQ review.

6. Reolink Argus 2: Indoor-outdoor pick

Inside-outside pick
reolink argus 2

We like the Reolink Argus 2 because it works just as well indoors as it does outdoors. Its starlight night vision gives you clear images up to thirty-six feet without any extra ambient light.

This camera uses a rechargeable battery or solar power, so you have a lot of flexibility about where to place it. In our experience, the battery drains fairly quickly if you don’t use the solar panel accessory.

Pros

  • Email and push notifications
  • Built-in microSD card slot
  • Free video playback via Reolink app
  • No base station

Cons

  • Wi-Fi connectivity issues
  • No web viewing capability
  • Motion detection delays

Setup is easy using the mobile app, but the camera doesn’t have a very stable Wi-Fi connection at times, which leads to choppy video playback. Read our Reolink Argus 2 review.

7. Amcrest 4MP UltraHD Indoor: Free storage pick

Free Storage Pick
Amcrest 4MP UltraHD Indoor

At SafeWise, we’re Amcrest fans, and this wireless indoor security camera doesn’t disappoint. Its remote pan and tilt function, easy setup, and variety of video storage options make this one of the best cameras available for under $100.

While this camera records video without issues, there’s a noticeable lag when you stream live video.

Pros

  • Remote pan and tilt
  • Multiple storage options
  • Two-way communication
  • Smart digital zoom

Cons

  • Limited rotation when mounted
  • Confusing user manual
  • Laggy live streaming

Unfortunately, the user manual is hard to follow, and mounting the Amcrest 4MP UltraHD on the wall limits the camera’s rotation options.

But we still like the free cloud storage and the addition of two-way talk.

8. YI Dome Camera: Audio quality pick

Audio pick
yi dome camera

The YI Dome Camera makes us think of R2-D2. It’s cute and looks like the type of tech you can count on to stay in touch with kids and pets when you can’t be at home.

The antinoise filter makes it easy to listen for baby’s cries or chat with kids about homework after school. You can even tell Rover to get off the sofa.

Pros

  • Cute design
  • Motion tracking
  • Antinoise filter for clear audio
  • No cloud storage limit

Cons

  • Limited night vision range
  • Android issues
  • Difficult setup

Another great feature of this wireless security camera is unlimited free cloud storage. But watch out if you’re an Android user—there are several reported issues with the Android app.

New model: YI Dome Camera X

The YI Dome Camera X (about $56) is a more-advanced version of the YI Dome Camera with artificial intelligence that helps it spot threats more easily. It records time lapse video to condense hours of footage into a few seconds for easy review. It can also detect people and abnormal sounds for additional security compared to the previous YI Dome Camera.

9. Abode Iota: Home security pick

Home security pick
Abode Iota security camera

The Abode Iota is a high-end home security camera and security system in one. This compact device delivers two-way talk, high video quality, and sensitive motion detection.

It also comes with the option to add 24/7 professional monitoring. That gives you a direct link to help through a monitoring center without buying any additional security equipment.

Pros

  • 24/7 monitoring available
  • Built-in siren
  • Entry sensors
  • Key fob control

Cons

  • Small size that limits security range
  • Poor sound quality

Best of all, Abode’s professional monitoring starts at just $8 per month, and there’s no contract required. Read our full Abode Home Security review.

10. Blink Mini: Budget Alexa pick

Budget Alexa pick
Blink Mini camera

Blink is an Amazon-owned security camera company that focuses on budget cameras. Its latest product is the Blink Mini, which we’ll admit is an attractive little camera. You can buy this camera for about $35, which competes quite well with Wyze and YI, but its main strength is Alexa integration.

Like all Amazon smart devices, this camera is less susceptible to incompatibility issues than third-party brands. Connecting to Alexa and Fire TV devices is a smooth experience and you can even see a live view on Alexa smart displays like the Echo Show.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Compatibility with Alexa, Fire TV
  • Live video on Alexa smart displays

Cons

  • Required subscription for video storage
  • Limited cloud storage, even with subscription

The Blink Mini requires a paid subscription (about $3 a month) to save videos, making it the first of Blink’s cameras without a free cloud storage option. Even with the subscription, Blink stores the same amount of video (about two hours), which is tiny compared to most brands.

Still, the Blink Mini is a good option if you want an affordable security camera to use with Alexa.

Check out our Blink cameras review for more information.

Our approach

To find the best wireless security cameras, we looked at price, image quality, reliability, ease of setup, smart features, night vision, and customer satisfaction.

Battery-powered cameras that fall into that wire-free category, like the Arlo Pro 3 and the Ring Stick Up Cam Battery, got extra credit when it came to ranking the top wireless security cameras this year.

But we couldn’t dismiss high-quality cameras like the Amcrest 4MP UltraHD, Wyze Cam Pan, and Google Nest Cam IQ Indoor just because of a compulsory power cord.

We tested several cameras in our homes, read expert reviews, researched industry standards and camera specs, and consulted thousands of customer reviews. Find out more about how we rank and review products in our full methodology

  • 60+ hours of research and testing
  • 11 in-home tests
  • 28 products considered
  • 1,100+ customer reviews read
  • 10 coffees consumed

Final word

There’s so many wireless security cameras to choose from and we barely scratched the surface of what kinds of cameras are out there. Still, we think that the Arlo Pro 3 is a standout product with its 100% wire-free operation. Its impressive video quality makes it hard for the competition to keep up. While it’s more expensive than most other cameras, the overall quality of the Arlo Pro 3 helps make up the difference in price.

Wireless security camera FAQ

Can my security camera be hacked?

The unfortunate truth is that, yes, security cameras can be vulnerable to hacking—but the good news is that you can do things to keep hackers out.

Nearly every security camera we looked at supports encryption. This protects the camera’s data stream (like videos of your kids after school) from prying eyes.

No matter what security features come with your camera, these tips can help you maximize the privacy of your security cameras:

  • Buy a camera with a recognizable name and purchase it from a trustworthy seller.
  • Make sure your home Wi-Fi network is secure.
  • Create unique, strong passwords for your camera and any apps you use to access it.
  • Keep firmware up-to-date on your camera and your Wi-Fi router.
  • Turn off remote viewing when you don’t need it.
  • Block the lens of your camera when you’re not using it—a post-it or a piece of painters tape will work.

Will a security camera work as a baby/kid/pet monitor?

We’ve learned that many people want a wireless security camera to keep an eye on the people and pets they love. If this is your goal, here are some things to consider:

  • Two-way communication: This lets you listen in and talk to the pets or people at home.
  • Night vision: Clear images in low light are especially important if you want to use the camera as a baby monitor.
  • Field of view: Most security cameras use a wide-angle lens, while baby monitors and nanny cams often use a more narrow range of vision to focus on the baby.
  • Pan and tilt: If you’re viewing pets or older kids remotely from the office or on a beach, you may want to be able to move the camera angle.

Can an indoor camera do double duty looking out a window?

Wireless cameras can’t have it all—watch things inside by day, and keep an eye on what’s going on outside after dark. It rarely works.

Most indoor security cameras will pick up glares and reflections when aimed out a window. This obscures the outside view, making it useless.

If security both outdoors and indoors is a priority for you, we recommend getting the right type of camera for each area. You may be able to find an indoor camera that claims to be specifically designed to minimize the glare and reflection of a window, but be sure to read a lot of customer reviews to verify that those claims are accurate.

Is an indoor wireless camera enough security?

If your goal is to protect against intruders, we recommend an outdoor camera first and foremost.

Outdoor security cameras can deter criminals and provide an early warning before someone enters your home. While indoor security cameras often help people catch a burglar after the fact, you have a better chance of sending a thief running with an outdoor camera.

And if you want to be connected to the police, you should look into security cameras that come with an option to add professional monitoring.

YI Home Camera 3 Review: Nice Features, Poor Connectivity

We really wanted to love the inexpensive little YI Home Camera, but its video is choppier than a chef on a cooking show and it can’t communicate with your smart home devices.

YI Home Camera 3 Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Two-way audio
  • Easy installation
  • Image planning
  • Different alert types
  • Low price tag

Cons

  • Choppy video
  • Connection delays
  • No smart integration

YI Home Camera 3 Cloud Subscription Plans

YI’s cloud storage plans vary depending on where you look. Why? We have no idea, but both the standard and premium plans listed on YI’s website are generally less expensive than those in the app, so we’ve included them here. The app includes a basic plan that’s only $3.99 a month and not offered on the website, so be sure to shop both the app and the website to find a plan that works for you.

YI’s monthly cloud storage fees are about the same price as Nest’s, but Nest offers continuous video recording with all of its plans. By comparison, Wyze Cam Pan gives you free 14-day rolling cloud storage for all motion- or sound-detected events.

Tech and Equipment

The YI 3 camera has an attractive modern design, but it’s not as maneuverable as other home security cameras. It doesn’t have a handy ball socket like Nest Cam or a fully panning lens like Wyze—you can only move the YI up and down—so mounting it on a wall might make it difficult to get a good viewing angle.

Fortunately, the YI Home Camera 3’s wide-angle lens makes up for its lack of maneuverability. No matter the size or shape of the room I placed it in, it was easy to find a good angle that captured the majority of the room’s area.

If you opt out of cloud service, you can use the YI camera’s micro SD card storage (SD card not included) instead. We inserted an SD card into the slot for our test period and it gave us about three days of motion-triggered recordings, even in high-traffic areas.

YI uses 1080p HD video, so the daytime picture quality was nice and clear when the connection was good. Turning your smartphone screen to the left or the right simulates camera panning and lets you see more of the picture. (We won’t talk about how much time I spent entertaining myself doing that.) The camera’s night vision was also quite clear, so no complaints there.

Unfortunately, the YI 3 often had very poor connectivity. Whenever I opened the app, it took several seconds to a full minute to buffer. When you’re anxious to see what triggered a notification, that amount of time feels like an eternity. If it did finally manage to connect, the video was choppy and occasionally pixelated. Sometimes the app would tell me the camera couldn’t connect and ask me to check network settings. When I did, it always showed connectivity as “excellent.”

Other times, the app didn’t give me any notifications about connectivity and I would assume it was connected. But when I’d walk through the room and still see a “live” video feed of an empty room, I’d realize it wasn’t really a live feed at all. It’s a cool trick for a bank heist movie, but not so great for my home security camera.

What’s in the Box

  • YI Home Camera 3
  • USB cable AC adapter
  • USB power cable

Installation

Installing the YI Home Camera 3 took only about 15 minutes, with no tools required. The app and voice prompts from the camera walked me through every step of setup.

The camera base has adhesive so you can conveniently stick it to a wall or another flat surface with no screws. The magnetic base lets you securely attach it to a metal surface like a refrigerator (so you can finally see who’s been eating your favorite yogurt). The camera needs to be plugged into a wall, but its cord is only about 6 feet long, so if you want to put it somewhere farther from an outlet, you’ll need to use an extension cord.

Features

App and Notifications

I set the camera up in my office, and despite the poor performance of its live feed, YI’s motion sensor video recordings and app notifications worked pretty well. When the camera detected motion, the app sent a notification to my phone. The videos were mostly clear, but to view anything longer than a 6-second notification clip, I had to switch over to cloud storage or the SD card footage.

I liked that I could adjust the frequency of the notifications in the app so I wouldn’t get a constant stream when my kids decided to use my office for a game of hide-and-seek, or when my husband was going in and out searching for his tape measure. (It was on his desk the whole time.) I could also set a schedule for the camera so I wouldn’t get notifications while I was in there working.

Two-Way Audio

I’ve used cameras with two-way audio before, and I’ve found that it’s a great way to talk with my kids when they’re at home and I’m not. Sadly, the YI Home Camera’s two-way audio rarely worked, and when it did, the sound kept cutting out—on both sides. The last thing I need is yet another way for my kids to avoid listening to me, so it was disappointing.

Sound Detection

The YI’s sound detection feature worked great for alerting me to loud noises, and I could adjust its sensitivity. It’s a nice feature if you want to use the camera as a baby monitor or get notified if your dog barks when you’re not at home.

Smart Detection

While I appreciated the camera’s ability to detect the difference between humans, animals, and other motion, I felt like YI used this feature as a way to advertise the Home Camera as a smart camera even though it has no smart home functionality. When compared to the best security cameras on the market, not having an integrated app or smart device integration is a significant strike against YI.

Smart Cloud Search

We like that YI Cloud has adopted the fast scanning feature of Nest’s cloud storage so you can find the recording you need quickly by looking through a spread of thumbnail shots. Unfortunately, trying to play back the clips from these thumbnail images worked only about half the time. You can also fast-forward video up to 32x normal speed to search through it quickly.

Customer Service

When I contacted YI support with a question via email, a representative got back to me with a personalized response within 24 hours. YI also has customer support lines open from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST, which are odd hours, but may have something to do with the company being based in China.

How YI Home Camera 3 Stacks Up

When it comes to features, YI is similar to Nest, but again, it doesn’t have Nest’s smart home capabilities. Pricewise, it’s not much more expensive than Wyze, but Wyze has free 14-day rolling cloud storage, smart home integration, and a full 360-degree view. So YI’s got some tough competition.

Summary

I love how YI has taken so many great features from other pricey top cameras and put them into this inexpensive home camera, but I wish the company had put a little more work into creating quality technology to keep its video feed connected. It was definitely more of a headache than a help. If I’d purchased this camera for my home security, I’d be returning it.

YI Camera FAQs

How is the YI 3 different from the YI 2?

The YI 3 has a slimmer profile than the YI 2, and it no longer has Gesture Recognition, which was a feature that allowed you to motion to the camera and record 10-second video clips. But YI added features like Smart Detection, Sound Detection, and Smart Cloud Search to the YI 3.

In our testing, the YI 2 occasionally had problems connecting, but once it was connected it didn’t have the same choppy, pixilated video issues that we found with the YI 3.

Is there a YI Home app for Windows?

Yes, but we’ve heard it’s a pain to use.1 Fortunately, you can also download the app on your iOS device, Android device, smartphone, or tablet, and YI Home also offers the latest version of its apps as APK files for eager Android users.

What are the pros and cons of having a wired security camera like the YI?

The biggest pro to wired security cameras is that you never have to worry about changing batteries. The cons are that you’re more limited in placement than you might be with wireless security cameras and you’re more vulnerable to power outages. Keep in mind that some “wireless” security cameras may still need to be wired for power—understanding how wireless cameras work can help you choose between wired and wireless cameras.

Can I have my YI Home Camera professionally monitored?

You can’t have the camera monitored, but YI does offer a 24/7 Emergency Response button that you can add to your app for around $5 a month. Pushing the button puts you in touch with Noonlight Certified Emergency Specialists who can send help to your location if needed.

How We Reviewed the YI Home Camera 3

We tested the YI Home Camera 3 by installing it first in a living room and then in a home office. We monitored the camera using the YI Home app on an iPhone 6, and we tested the connection both at home and away. We tested the camera’s features with normal use, and we also used scenarios that simulated real-world applications. Our full methodology can tell you more about our review process.
